The Cars That Money Can't Buy – BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics
Sun 11th Aug 2019
Sometimes your wallet won't stretch to purchasing your dream motor. But don't worry too much, there are some cars that even the biggest bank balances can't buy, the dream cars that will forever remain a dream. These are the concept cars that never go into production.
BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics
The BMW i brand, for which the German motoring powerhouse is quite rightly heralded, putting them at the forefront of the electric car revolution, saw its genesis in 2009 when the company unveiled the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics to great acclaim at the International Motor Show in Germany.
Though the original Efficient Dynamics concept was a plug-in hybrid, with a three cylinder turbo-diesel engine, it was the electric motors which kickstarted the evolution of the EV for BMW, one which would eventually lead to the i8 becoming he world's top-selling plug-in electrified sports car.
As to be expected, the Vision concept took spaceage lightweight design aesthetics and combined them with innovative electric powertrain engineering. But as to be expected of a BMW, it was capable of achieving 0-60mph in 4.8 seconds, and at the time was beating the market-leading Prius with 62.6 miles per gallon. The Vision came with a jaw-dropping top speed of 155 mph, 2+2 seating, polycarbonate windows and those majestic gull-wing doors, which in part helped the Vision achieve a drag coefficient of 0.22.
Considering the fact that this was a car that was conceived ten years ago, the Efficient Dynamics team were producing elements which would look futuristic on cars of today and with a strapline of 'less fuel consumpton, more driving pleasure', BMW seemed determined to embrace an emission free future. The features included automatic start/stop, optimum shift indicator, ECO PRO mode, route-ahead assistant and brake energy regeneration.
"The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car demonstrates the potential of the BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy to an extent never seen before. In this way BMW once again shows the company's unusual skill and competence in developing particularly efficient high-performance drivetrain technologies," said BMWs press release on launch.
"Applying this philosophy, BMW is able to develop vehicles meeting the need for saving natural resources and at the same time offering a new rendition of Sheer Driving Pleasure. A sports car with the dynamic performance of a BMW M Car and the fuel economy of a modern small car indeed opens up highly attractive perspectives for individual mobility in the world of tomorrow.
"The new concept car offers a particularly fascinating experience through its individual character. BMW Vision EfficientDynamics is neither a mere variant of a production car built for maximum efficiency nor a purely visionary study completely separated from series development. Rather, all the technologies contributing to the car's outstanding efficiency come from a development process conceived for regular production. Indeed, some of these technologies are already in use in current BMW models, others are approaching production standard or have already proven their functional benefits in practical tests and in prototypes."
